Anywhere in the world, pregnant women are given much priority in almost everything (e.g., lines, health needs, etc.). After all, the baby she carries in her womb is expected to be a source of utmost joy and hope for the society.
However, this was not the case for Ms. Lu, a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Ningbo, China. The woman was reportedly beaten because of robbery allegations. Can you imagine yourself doing the same to a pregnant woman? That’s just downright immoral and oppressive.
After she’s been charged with theft three times already, the villagers grew tired of her act. They decided to tie her up to a post, where she was scorned in public and beaten roughly. An act that closely mimics that of those inflicted to witches that were burned alive.
One of the villagers told that Lu was caught and was let go the last she stole something, but villagers became infuriated when they saw her come back. She wouldn’t have been brutally beaten if she didn’t come back, the villager added.
Luckily, a good Samaritan came to Ms. Lu’s aid and helped her on the situation.
Justice came early as the man who sparked the beating, Mr. Yin, is now doing his time in a Chinese prison for a total of 8 days with a penalty of 300 Yuan, approximately P2, 000.00
There are no reports that can tell about the whereabouts and condition of Ms. Lu right now.
It’s obvious that both parties, Ms. Lu, and the villagers, are at fault. However, Lu’s inadequacy as a person shouldn’t be passed on the life in her womb. The baby is deemed innocent, and shouldn’t have been at the receiving end of the villagers’ wrath.
Moreover, inflicting physical pain shouldn’t have been the way of villagers. If Ms. Lu’s really guilty of theft, then there’s a proper court to settle that. We should never allow ourselves to be agents of violence and brutality. Above all, never do that to someone who’s obviously going through something, particularly pregnancy.
