You won’t believe what this man from Marawi City said about Martial Law!

Last May 24, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte declared Martial Law over the entire Mindanao region, following the fatal attacks of terrorists from the Maute Group in Marawi City. President Digong announced this declaration while he was in Russia for a state visit and meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The state visit was actually cut short so President Digong can personally attend to and focus on the situation in Marawi City.

Since his declaration of Martial Law, the sentiments of the Filipinos were divided and this was evident in various social media channels. Supporters of President Digong fully supports Martial Law at this difficult time, so as to save the lives of innocent civilians who are caught in between the terror attacks.

On the other hand, Duterte critics were vocal in their opposition in implementing Martial Law over the whole Minadanao region. Their point was the terror attacks were focused in Marawi City only, and the rest of the cities in Mindanao might just be scared about this. However, in his recent interviews and press conferences, President Digong was firm in his decision and even cited that he decided to put the entire Mindanao region under Martial Law since these cities are too close that some rebel groups might occupy as well.

Due to the ongoing debate about Martial Law, a Mindanao citizen spoke up about what they feel about the situation, as the people from Luzon and Visayas are mostly present in the online discussion on the matter. According to Chito Samontina, whenever they hear someone say No to Martial Law it translates to No to Peace in Mindanao. He also answered critics’ impending questions on the whereabouts of the President when these attacks took place. He defended President Duterte by saying that he was at work when this transpired, and that he cut it short to be able to focus on stopping the terror attacks.

Samontina called for peace and unity at this difficult time, and for everyone to set aside their personal and political interests for a while. He also reiterated that as Filipino citizens, we should not be afraid of Martial Law because it only aims to rule over terrorism, and we are not terrorists to begin with.
