Parents and friends of 16-year-old Davis Allen Cripe were shocked after hearing the news that the teenager died earlier this week. What shocked them, even more, was the discovery of what actually ended the life of the teenager.
According to witnesses, Davis collapsed while he was attending his class and then became unconscious in an instant. By this time, they had no idea that he was already suffering from cardiac arrhythmia which was caused by high intakes of caffeine within a short period of time. It was known that two hours before he collapsed, Davis drank an energy drink, a large Mountain Dew soda, and a single serving of McDonald’s latte all in the duration of fewer than two hours.
Prior to the incident, Davis was a healthy young boy, showing no signs of any heart ailment or any of his organs depleting. The coroner also added that he did not show signs of any heart condition while he was still living, That is why his family was dumbfounded upon hearing Davis’ sudden demise.
If we look at it, these three beverages are taken in by most people every day. Most people might also say that it may seem impossible that these regular drinks might cause somebody’s life. But that assumption clearly shows how little we know about the amount of caffeine loaded into our meals. According to specialists, teenagers should only consume a maximum of 100mg of caffeine every day. But according to reports, Davis had consumed as much as 470mg in a span of two hours.
Caffeine overdose should be taken seriously to avoid fatal incidents such as this. Last year, a few students were rushed to the hospital in the Philippines after drinking 2 bottles of a popular ready-to-drink iced coffee, known to contain 78mg of caffeine each. People who are stressed at work tend to drink more than two cups of coffee per day and some energy drinks as well, hoping to get through their workloads. Let this news be a lesson to everyone that a heavy amount of caffeine intake can get you going, but it can also take your life away.
